Registered Katahdin Hair Sheep Breeding Stock
We sell a small number of ram lambs and ewe lambs as breeding stock each year. We want to test the lambs as thoroughly as possible, for our own selection as well as for the customers that purchase from us. We make our final selection of breeding stock to keep and buy towards the end of September / beginning of October. That gives us enough time to measure growth, maternal traits, parasite resistance and carcass traits.
We measure and collect the following:
-
Number of lambs born and weaned
-
Birth, 60 day (WWT), weaning, early post-weaning (PWWT) and post-weaning weights (PWWT)
-
Scrotal Circumference (PSC) on a large group of ram lambs
-
At least one fecal egg count, preferably two on each lamb
-
Loin eye depth (PEMD) and fat (PFAT) on a larger group of ram lambs
This takes, not just work time but also calendar time because animals have to a certain age before some of these measurements can be taken.
All breeding stock for 2025 has been reserved

We are excited to have “Charles Parker” as a sire for 2025 lambs. Thank you, Roxanne Newton for lending him to us. He is very well tested with 198 offspring in three flocks. He excels in parasite resistance (in the top 1% for the breed in WFEC and PFEC) and milk (in the top 4% for the breed in MWWT).
“Rock” is a homegrown ram that we sold to Kathy Bielek in 2021 as a ram lamb. We saw a photo of him in 2023 and really liked the way that he grew out and bought him back. This is our first year using him here. He has a great shape and we hope to see some nice, meaty lambs out of him this year.
GBR 2170 is a homegrown ram that we are using for the third year .He is well tested with over 100 lambs in NSIP and we lambed 12 of his daughters in 2025. He excels in growth (in the top 1% for WWT and PWWT) and parasite resistance(in the top 4% for WFEC and top 9% for PFEC). He is also in the top 20% for eye muscle depth (EMD).
GBR 24025 is a homegrown ram lamb that we used for the first time. We were really impressed with his deep body and muscling and were really happy that his EBVs turned out well. He excels in growth(in the top 1% for WWT and PWWT) with good parasite resistance(top 4% for WFEC and top 30% for PFEC). He is also in the top 25% for eye muscle depth(EMD). We are excited to see how his lambs grow out.
GBR 24097 is another homegrown ram lamb that we used for the first time this year. His EBVs are in the top 25% for most traits and he is in the top 1% for eye muscle depth(EMD). He is a nice, long bodied ram.
“Pete” is a nice beefy ram lamb that we bought from Pete Odle. We needed to bring in some new blood lines and we have always been impressed with the look of his sheep. His home flock is not in NSIP so the EBVs that he has are only based on genotyping and a grandparent that has some NSIP data. As we test his offspring his EBVs should reveal themselves. We plan on keeping ewe lambs out of “Pete” as we want to make sure that we test maternal traits on his daughters to build out his EBVs. Unless anything unforeseen happens, we plan to use him again for 2026 lambs, which should have more mature EBVs.
“Bruce” is another nice beefy ram lamb that we bought from Pete Odle. He is a half brother to “Pete”. We needed to bring in some new blood lines and we have always been impressed with the look of his sheep. His home flock is not in NSIP so the EBVs that he has are only based on genotyping and a grandparent that has some NSIP data. As we test his offspring his EBVs will reveal themselves. We plan on keeping ewe lambs out of “Bruce” as we want to make sure that we test maternal traits on his daughters to build out his EBVs. Unless anything unforeseen happens, we plan to use him again for 2026 lambs, which should have more mature EBVs.
“Wayne” is a ram lamb that we bought from Dan Turner. He has impressive EBVs with most traits in the top 30% for the breed. He excels in growth (Top 2% for WWT and PWWT) and prolificacy (Top 20% for NLB, NLW and Index), with good milk and parasite resistance.
GBR 3196 is a homegrown ram that we used for clean-up this year. This is the second year that we are using him and we lambed out six of his 2024 daughters this year. He is from a great maternal line in our flock. He excels in milk (top 1% for the breed) with good growth, parasite resistance and eye muscle depth.
